All Along The Merri Creek

From Coburg Lake to Clifton Hill
You know the way, you’ve got the will
Take a paper and pencil
And off to Merri Creek
Pick a rhythm, choose a theme
Settle on a rhyming scheme
Cast your troubles to the stream
And walk the Merri Creek
Prams and pushers, roller blades
Australian natives cast their shade
Upon the peaceful promenade
Along the Merri Creek
Dogs off leash run on the grass
A vegan father cycles past
Graffiti on the overpass
That strides the Merri Creek
There’s something you don’t expect
Golden domes and minaret
You wonder what is coming next
Along the Merri Creek
Kids carve comments on the path
A local teacher takes a class
Two girls giggle as you pass
Them, by the Merri Creek
Willows weep, they don’t belong
I like them there, I know I’m wrong
It won’t be long, they’ll all be gone
From The Merri Creek
Fitness freaks with firm physiques
Make you feel you’ve past your peak
You go from classic to antique
Along the Merri Creek
Old folks stop to catch their breath
Fleetingly you think of death
Now you’re taking faster steps
Along the Merri Creek
A Bellbird’s one note melody
Two lovers kiss in reverie
You wonder what you’ll have for tea
After the Merri Creek
